Invention Design and Prototyping
Even though the US Patent Office doesn't require a working prototype to prove a patented invention works, your prototype may be the most important step you take in the development process. Prospective partners will want to see and understand how your invention works before they'll be willing to be your partner and spend money on development. Likewise, during the prototyping phase is often where improvements to your invention are discovered and new, superior, patentable subject matter is found.
The first prototypes are usually crude, frequently hand-made and may be non-functional. They typically only provide basic design and shape. From there, prototypes will be refined until they reach a completely functional stage that can be properly tested. In some cases, 3-D virtual prototypes may be used as an interim step to the final production model.
